6th – 12th April 2017, Main Street, Buncrana, Co. Donegal

Further details available onwww.amazinggrace.ie

The Amazing Grace Festival celebrates the dramatic story of John Newton’s arrival in Buncrana on the shores of Lough Swilly, Co Donegal on 8 April 1748. After a violent storm in the Atlantic Ocean, Newton was literally saved from death as his ship found refuge in Ireland. But this moment also marked the beginning of his spiritual transformation – ‘the hour I first believed’ – that would lead to his life as a clergyman, a prolific hymn writer and mentor to William Wilberforce throughout the long battle to abolish the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Am a Grace that lived in Downings for many years and never know the connection. I am delighted to learn and find as much information from this site as I can. I currently live in Boston, Massachusetts. Great job as we are the first city in the USA to abolish slavery and really started the industrial revolution in Lowell MA. Thank you for informing others of this great man and fantastic county!
