This monument was dedicated in memory of the Forty Three Erne Estuary Fishermen, their Solicitor Frank Gallagher, their motivator Martin Keegan and fundraiser Frank Gettins, in what infamously became known as “The Kildoney Men’s Court Case” during the period 1925-1933.
The official unveiling and dedication of the Monument took place as part of The Gathering initiative in 2013.
The Erne fishermen will be remembered for their heroic stand taken against the oppressive English landlord system that robbed the fishermen of the bountiful salmon fisheries of the river Erne. The Erne was seized as crown property on the surrender of Tir Chonaill to the English in 1602. By 1620 all royal grants of fishing on the Erne estuary were gathered into a single private ownership. The great natural harvest of the tidal river was withheld from town land and town alike.
