The continuing tradition of the Finn Valley AC Stephens Day 5k will take place once again this year. It is the longest successive road event in the North West beginning as it did in the early 70’s and despite weather challenges on a small number of occasions the event has always gone ahead. There have been many exciting days and memorable occasions as double Olympic Champion Mo Farah, England and World and Olympic Champion Vivian Cheryuiot of Kenya have graced the occasion. There have been over the years, many notable personalities getting the event underway.
This year’s event will start at 12 noon. Entry can be made on the day or at the Finn Valley reception in the intervening weeks prior to the event. Early entry is recommended for those who would rather avoid the inevitable queue. Over the years it has proved to be a popular event for families, and the many people who come home for the festive season and it is a chance for all to join in, whether running, jogging or walking. All are invited regardless of athletic ability in what has become a tradition locally. On the day there will be an abundance of prizes and refreshments which is the norm, with everybody welcome for what is above all a community event.
The honorary starter for 2018 run will be announced in coming weeks. It’s one of those occasions that’s firmly set in the mindset of the local community after 48 years. It is also interesting to note that this event began in the neighbouring woods at Drumboe with approximately twenty people involved and then it was organised as a handicap race with athletes being given a start based on fitness and ability. At its best in recent years, there have been approximately 800 competitors turning out on the day and it is hoped that this year’s event will be no exception.
