Cathedral Quarter Literary Festival
October 2018, Letterkenny
This Festival is a celebration of writing, reading, spoken word and drama offering an extensive weekend long programme of workshops, readings, talks, plays and bus tours, growing more imaginative each year. We bring the finest Irish and International literary figures to Donegal celebrating local heritage, culture and literary links to the area. Celebrating great links to the area such as Maud Gonne, Patrick Pearse, Michael Palin and Brendan Behan.
This festival promises to be a real treat for lovers of classic literature.
Jane Austen is one of the outstanding figures in the world of words, creator of such classic characters as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, and to this day, and more than 200 years after her death her novels are still widely read. Television dramatisations of her work still draw huge audiences. What is not particularly well known is that she has strong links with Letterkenny. Her niece Cassandra Knight is buried alongside her husband Lord George Hill in the graveyard of Conwal Parish Church at the top of the Church Lane. She has other connections with other parts of the country as well. Dr Hillan will be exploring all those links during her wide-ranging lecture.
