The Warp and Weft of Heritage Weekend
Warp and Weft of Heritage 2018 weekend: Remembering the 430th Anniversary of the Spanish Armada
12th to 14th October 2018
This year, the festival will host a unique series of events including historic talks, an official documentary screening, wine theatre, living history demonstrations and an Armada excursion by bus. Talks will focus on Armada history, archaeology, heritage, folklore and 16th century Hiberno-Spanish links.
These commemorative events are of national and international importance. They also take place during the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
The weekend is the third, and final event in a series that our group has been involved in.
The first was held in July. An historical walk was organised from Kiltoorish (castle site) to Killybegs (harbour) in Co. Donegal.
We had an official unveiling of a footprint memorial stone commemorating those that set sail from Killybegs and met their fate, on the Girona, at Lacada Point on the Antrim coast in September 1588. Artifacts from this wreck were recovered and form a key part of the exhibition in the Ulster Museum today.
The second event took place last weekend where a sister stone marker was unveiled at Rosbeg Pier, Ardara, Co. Donegal.
The Warp & Weft Weekend 2018 will be the finale in our 2018 commemorations and all are welcome.
