The Warp and Weft of Heritage Weekend

The community group the Ardara GAP Heritage and History Group are organising their inaugural ‘Warp and Weft of Heritage’ Weekend under the theme of ‘Celebrating Heritage’ from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October. The programme for the weekend commences on Friday night at 7:00pm with Registration and Welcome at the Nesbitt Arms Hotel. At 7:30pm Conor Newman, chairperson of The Heritage Council will speak about ‘The importance of heritage to communities – The Irish Nation’. Bringing the evening to a close will be an Oíche Coís Tine incorporating traditional Irish music and song, at the Céilí House Bar from 9:00pm.
The programme for Saturday begins with registration at the Nesbitt Arms Hotel at 9:30am. From 10:00am onwards a number lively and engaging talks will take place. These include; 10:00am – 10:45am, Michael Gibbons, author and director of Michael Gibbons Archaeology Travel, ‘Little known sea weed farms which are common from Ardara to the Inishowen Peninsula’, 10:50am – 11:35am, Karl Brady, author and underwater archaeologist , ‘Shipwrecks near Donegal and their national significance’, 11:35am – 12:00pm, Tea/coffee, 12:00pm – 12.45pm, Judith Hoad, author and herbalist, ‘Drawing in the warp for a nation’s future – the revolutionising of the textile industry’, 12:50pm – 1:35pm, Lunch, 1:35 – 2:20pm, Crístóir Mac Cárthaigh, director of the National Folklore Collection, U.C.D., ‘Work of the Irish Folklore Commission of Donegal’, and from 2:25pm – 3:10pm, Breandán MacSuibhne, historian and author, ‘Charlie McGuinness, the Ardara bank raid and the Rosbeg ambush, 16 June 1921’. From about 3:30pm – 5:00pm there will be a series of workshops, demonstrations, field trips and a ‘Bring Your Own Sod of Turf’ storytelling afternoon! Some of the workshops have limited capacity, so booking is essential. At 7:00pm dinner will be served in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel and will be followed by entertainment by The Last Chance. On Sunday morning the talks will be held in The Dolmen Centre, Kilclooney. Registration begins at 9.00am. Conor Curran, author and lecturer at DCU will speak about ‘The Role of sport in nationalism in Donegal’ from 9.30 – 10.15am and this will be followed by a talk on ‘Doon Fort and its cultural significance’ by Paula Harvey from 10.00 – 10.40am. A brisk walk across Narin Strand follows at 11.15am so as to reach Iniskeel Island at low tide will mark the end of the first Heritage Weekend organised by this voluntary community group. We hope as many people as possible will come and enjoy the event and that we will get lots of conversations going about our precious heritage and culture!
